New Jersey Evergreens
Evergreens come in a vast variety of species, some growing slow or fast, tall or low and can be shaped and pruned to specific shapes and sizes. Some popular choices are:
Green Giant Arborvitae
The Green Giant Arborvitae is a large and fast-growing evergreen, adding up to 3 feet of height every year until maturity. It is resistant to both deer and wind, so its dense, rich foliage is never in any danger.
Leland Cypress
These are Leyland Cypress. They prefer sunlight to shade. They can get up to 25’ tall If not trimmed. They are a deer resistant evergreen hedging plant that grow at a rate of 2-3ft per year.
Emerald Green Arborvitae
The Emerald Arborvitae is one of the thickest of our evergreens, though it does not grow as wide or as tall as the others, topping off at around 15 feet. It is great for smaller yards, creating a neat and crisp look that lasts all year. We recommend against using this tree in areas of high deer traffic.
Skip Laurel
Skip Laurels. The Latin name is Schipkaensis. They tolerate part shade and part sun. They are deer resistant. They can be trimmed into a evergreen hedge that can get up to 12’ tall if desired.
Hollies
Hollies are among the top choices for privacy plantings and for good reason. Their dense, evergreen foliage and upright form make for a reliable wall. Hollies are the preferred plant for areas with more shade than sun.
Ilex Steeds
These are Ilex Steeds. They can grow in both partial shade and full sunlight. They are an deer resistant evergreen hedging shrub. They can be trimmed into a solid evergreen hedge up to 8’ tall.
